2023年夏至の酒丸。

Sakemaru for the summer solstice of 2023.

The summer solstice of 2023 has passed.
This is Sakemaru.
It started at the Tokyo National Museum.
I went to see the "Ancient Mexico" exhibition.
This is a quick day trip by bus leaving Tateyama City early in the morning.

Actually,
I love the culture of the Americas, Central and South America...
I took a trip to Mexico when I was in my thirties.
The main purpose of the trip was to visit the Teotihuacan Pyramids...
We also went to the Mexican Museum of Anthropology for further study.
I've also seen the mask that inspired Mil Mascaras.
In the evening, we went to listen to mariachi music,
Go see Lucha Libre.
I bought souvenirs for "Skull Day," which is the equivalent of Obon in Japan...
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Moreover,
The flight was double booked and they upgraded me.
They put me in first class for economy class prices.
Good memories.
And the highlight of this time is this!

Known as the "Red Queen"!
It was discovered in the 1990s.
Historically speaking, it is quite recent.
A queen from the 600s
He had been sleeping in his coffin for about 1,400 years.
What's more, it is covered with a pigment called vermilion.
The mask is made of jade and obsidian,
Other accessories are also made of intricately crafted jade and shell.
Amazing quality.
There were lots of other amazing exhibits too...
This came out in the second half,
All my memories have been rewritten (I'm glad I took pictures).
Everyone, please try it.

So, that’s why…
Today I'd like to talk about fashion in Central American culture, including Mexico.

First up, here's the opening act.

Yes, everyone loves Ray Liotta.
Plus, it's a scene from Goodfellas.
A shot of them relaxing at a resort in Florida.
Speaking of Good Fellows...
Although the extremely long collared dress shirts are synonymous with...
Ray Liotta plays the lead role.
He shows off such cool style in just one scene (as expected from director Scorsese).
He is wearing what is known as a "Cuban shirt."

Now, let's start by learning about Cuban shirts.

Cuba is here.

Florida peninsula, just past Miami.

It is also next to Mexico.
The Cuban shirt...
Of course, I am referring to the shirts worn in Cuba.
Because it's a hot country, instead of a jacket,
A shirt with jacket-like functionality (pockets, etc.).
However…
The Cuban shirt
In fact, it became more famous in Mexico than in Cuba.
It could simply be that the population is large...
In Mexico, it is used for formal wear at ceremonial occasions and for government uniforms.
Since the 1970s, huge quantities have been in circulation.
So, to second-hand clothing stores,
We are now seeing a lot of Cuban shirts made from cotton-polyester.

Apparently it has been worn in Cuba for a long time...
What made it major was
It's actually the rock and roll culture of the 1950s.
This is it.

This is what is known as a "Nassau jacket."
Is this picture easier to understand?

With Elvis the King at the helm,
The Nassau jacket was worn as a costume by many rockabilly people.
It is also known as the "Carmel Jacket"...
The original inspiration for this jacket is the Cuban shirt!

So again, a geography lesson.

This is Nassau.
A resort town located between Cuba and Miami.

In the 1950s,
Miami flourished as a summer resort for wealthy Americans.
Even more praised was
It was Nassau Island and the Nassau Jacket.

The Nassau jacket from the 1950s...
This jacket skillfully incorporates the details of a Cuban shirt.
Box pleats on the chest and center back...
There are symmetrical pockets on the waist and chest.
The crucial difference from the Cuban shirt is that
It's a jacket so it has long sleeves.
And the other one is,
Since it was the 1950s, the material was rayon gabardine.

As Dry Bones,
Using this 1950s Nassau jacket as a starting point,
So that it can be worn in Japan where the heat is intense,
I designed it with short sleeves and made of summer material.

First, this.
Linen Cuban shirt!

Cool and refreshing linen fabric.
The coarsely woven fabric is highly breathable,
Truly the ultimate summer ingredient.

Available in two colors: natural and charcoal.

And next up is this!
Nep print Cuban shirt!

The shape is the same as above, but the material is cotton, making it easier to handle.

The nep print runs in all directions,
A truly fifties-like masterpiece.

Finally, here's something different.
Cuban shirt "Pineapple"!

It features an all-over pineapple print.
The material is cotton,
A lace-like weave woven on a dobby loom.

Box pleats and pineapple print,
Full of tropical atmosphere.

Of course, the loyal fans who have been asking for Dry Bones Cuban shirts for a long time...
Cuban shirts are also available for beginners to choose from.
This year we have prepared three patterns.
It looks like it's going to get hot early this year, so get it early.

The first thing I wrote about in this blog was the Ancient Aztec exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum.
With due respect,
I wore a long-sleeved Hawaiian shirt with a Mexican pattern .

I actually wanted to wear the Lucha Libre pattern I made over 30 years ago, but...
It was a light rain and it was cool, so I wore long sleeves.
I love long sleeve Hawaiian shirts.

see you.
