The design is based on the military shirt jacket with big pockets that was popular from the 1910s to 1930s.
This big pocket pullover jacket became famous in the 1940s during World War II when prisoners of war wore denim versions of this style. At the time, it was originally manufactured and distributed as a utility jacket for the US ARMY.
However, what is not widely known is that before the denim version of this style existed, it had been worn in a variety of materials since around World War I. In addition to serge, materials at that time included twill and viyella.
Also, the buttons for this series at that time were not zinc buttons engraved with "USARMY", but a collection of various metal buttons.
So to recreate that look, we used a loosely sewn olive drab serge. Also, the front buttons are laurel pattern metal buttons with a one star engraved on them. The distinctive symmetrical large pockets and pullover style are also unique to this style.
The relatively large silhouette allows you to layer it with a sweatshirt hoodie or flannel shirt. On the other hand, it is a rare piece that looks masculine even when worn alone as a Henley neck T-shirt.
