This design is based on the striped T-shirt, which became hugely popular in America during the 1950s and 60s and later became synonymous with youth culture.
Striped T-shirts were especially popular among teenagers in the 1950s.
In the early period, thick stripes in two colors were the mainstream, but as time went on, the stripe spacing became thinner and more irregular, and the number of colors increased.
In the late 1950s, the main pattern was a 3-4 color scheme, with stripes less than 10mm wide featuring a design of a specific color, filled in with thicker stripes, and even thinner stripes at the edges.
A famous example is Gordie, the protagonist of "Stand by Me" (set in 1959), who wears a red-based multi-striped T-shirt.
My personal favorite is Caleb, the protagonist of the American TV series "American Gothic" (a horror series executive produced by Sam Raimi; the time period is unknown).
He appears in almost every episode wearing a striped T-shirt with a different, vibrant color scheme.
This classic striped T-shirt has been recreated to match the feel of the era.
The material is 40-count double-ply cotton jersey.
Its soft feel and excellent sweat absorption make it a comfortable material to wear directly against the skin.
The chest pocket is pattern-matched.
Pattern matching is difficult with stretchy jersey material, but a skilled seamstress has finished it beautifully.
Furthermore, the body fabric is intentionally cut and sewn slightly towards the "back shoulder."
This is a cutting and sewing technique from that era that emphasized shoulder stiffness and movement.
The collar rib uses 20-count rib knit.
This rib knit is cut at a 45-degree angle and then sandwiched and sewn on.
This ribbing method utilizes the elasticity of the rib knit itself and is a sewing technique from around the 1950s.
This T-shirt has enough presence to stand out on its own, like a protagonist in a movie or drama, but it's also easy to pair with denim jackets or sports jackets as an inner layer.
It's an item you'll want in variations of colors and patterns.
