We have restored a light-weight denim apron from the 1940s and 1950s.
The denim aprons from this time have a simple texture that other materials don't have. The reason for this is that most of them are produced with the width of the old denim fabric as the width of the aprons. In other words, the only sewing parts are the top and bottom and the pockets, so the construction is simple.
Also, due to the nature of aprons, they are the type that are going to be used vigorously, so many of them have clear vertical fading caused by uneven threads that are typical of this age.
Taking these circumstances into consideration, this apron was designed.
I happened to find some deadstock narrow width (80cm width) light ounce denim and it was made with selvedge, so this width is the width of the apron.
We aimed for a simple design with as few stitching as possible, so all three pocket openings use selvedge. This means that with heavy use, the body will sag vertically and the pockets will sag horizontally.
The neck and waist straps are made of 14mm wide cotton herringbone tape, which is also very simple in design.
To secure the tape to the body, we used double rivets. First of all, we chose a sturdy construction that will not come off.
This is a hidden gem that you can use for years or even decades and enjoy the vintage-like fading of the color.
