This is a reproduction of the rayon "Thunderbird" print sports jacket that became a massive hit in the mid-1950s.
Sports jackets had been made using gabardine fabric since the 1940s.
As the 1950s ushered in an era of prosperity, manufacturers began producing textiles featuring a wide variety of prints.
While all-over patterns were the norm, a "horizontal band design emphasizing only the chest area" became hugely popular among the fashion-conscious crowd.
The "Thunderbird" pattern, in particular, was a textile design that took the era by storm.
It appeared in retail catalogs in 1955 and was originally offered in a range of colors.
Note: The Thunderbird is a legendary giant bird from the folklore of indigenous peoples in North America.
It is a creature of myth and legend—often associated with Native American cultures—and its image can frequently be found on totem poles.
Dry Bones designed and produced this jacket by taking a vintage original and refining it.
The fabric is rayon gabardine, just like the original.
Despite its matte finish, the colors are vibrant, and the fabric is thick, giving the jacket a substantial, weighty feel.
We also resolved a common issue found in the originals: the tendency for the front zipper to snag on the fabric.
By sewing a thin kite string into the seam allowance (concealed within the fabric fold), we created a structure that prevents snagging.
The lining is made of cupro satin, a material renowned for its luster and smooth texture.
As a regenerated fiber—like the rayon used for the outer shell—it pairs perfectly with the main fabric.
The front zipper features a Dry Bones original pull tab.
We take pride in having successfully reproduced the vintage original while simultaneously evolving it.
As a side note, this textile design can even be spotted in a famous movie.
In Francis Ford Coppola's *Peggy Sue Got Married*, a boy in the 1960s—the era the protagonist travels back to—is seen wearing a hooded ski jacket featuring this very pattern. I feel this reflects the kind of attention to detail characteristic of Director Coppola, who places great importance on costumes.
