This is a reproduction of a shirt that was hugely popular in the 1940s and 1950s, featuring a deliberately printed yarn-dyed pattern.
In the 1950s, it became popular to reuse various textile patterns that were originally created using yarn dyeing by printing them.
For example, argyle, a traditional British knitwear pattern, kasuri, a traditional Japanese kimono woven pattern, and checks that originated in India and Africa.
These patterns were originally created by dyeing the yarn and then knitting or weaving it. By deliberately printing these traditional patterns, we broke away from preconceived notions and created something new.
However, such innovative pattern proposals did not last long, and gradually declined by the end of the 1950s. Also, around this time, synthetic fibers began to appear, and the apparel industry entered a new period of fierce competition.
We have tried to express FADS from that era using deadstock printed fabric.
The design featured a long point collar and two pocket flaps, which were all the rage at the time. This boxy silhouette was popular for a variety of occasions, from under a suit to wearing with denim.
Enjoy these precious and adventurous textiles that were all the rage for just a few years before disappearing.
