It is said that this coat of arms has been in use since before the Common Era, but it spread widely with the prosperity of the Roman Empire. It was later used as the coat of arms of the Spanish and Russian Empires, and also of the House of Habsburg.

In modern times, it is famous as the symbol of the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. The 32nd degree is also known as the "Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret," and is said to be the second highest ranking official in Freemasonry after the 33rd degree.
