I found some deadstock textile featuring a palm tree on a vintage Hawaiian shirt from the 1950s, so I decided to create a new pattern for it.
This palm tree design was produced by the Hawaiian shirt brand Kahanamoku in the 1950s. Personally, I think it's one of the three great vintage Hawaiian shirt designs, along with the Hundred Tigers and the Ukulele.
This project came about because we discovered cotton fabric with that pattern.
However, the print itself is about 30cm wide, which is probably more suitable for a cushion cover than for a shirt. So, with the idea of making it into a shirt in mind, I decided to cut the bottom half back and use the same color scheme for the other parts.
Also, since the pockets cross over the seams, we have made them welt pockets.
We have completed a cotton Hawaiian shirt with a completely new look (but with a mainstream print).
The fabric used this time is deadstock cotton broadcloth from the United States, which was only imported to Japan in limited quantities.
The collar is a long-pointed open collar, reminiscent of the early 1950s style.
This pattern is essential for creating a 1950s American look during the hot summer months.
The deadstock fabric was only available in brown, so I used similar colors for the accents: old gold and sepia.
As this is deadstock fabric, production is limited. Hurry!
