S/S Hawaiian Shirt “BEER”
DS-2724 S/S Hawaiian Shirt “BEER”
100% Rayon
Sizes 40 and 42 are sold out.
This is based on the uniform (?) of a Japanese beer manufacturer that existed in the 1950s.
In the 1950s, Hawaiian shirts were used for sales promotion by Japanese beer makers in America. Some were from American beer makers, so they were probably popular at the time.
The pale background features beer bottles, maiko, folding fans and lanterns, creating a truly "Japanese" textile design.
On hot summer days, when beer was delicious, salesmen wearing shirts like this would be running around diners and bars.
The vintage items do not have a brand name, and only have the words "MADE IN JAPAN" written on them. Therefore, we assume that they were not sold to the general public.
The material is rayon filament. Thin, strong rayon thread is tightly twisted and woven to give it a glossy, cool feel.
It is the best material for Hawaiian shirts.
In the 1950s, Japan was still suffering from the scars of defeat in the Pacific War, and these were probably worn by courageous merchants who traveled to America, a great power, carrying beer as their commodity. They are rarely seen in the vintage market. This lost masterpiece has been resurrected.
