We have recreated saddle shoes (officially known as saddle oxfords), which were all the rage in the United States in the 1950s.
In the 1950s, along with the Ivy League fashion, Combi's signature saddle shoes became a huge hit across the U.S. They were especially popular among teenagers, with most people owning a pair.
Its main feature was a light-colored upper and a dark brown or black "saddle" that touched the instep. The name "saddle oxford" came from the fact that this instep resembled a saddle used for horse riding, and the word "oxford" (derived from the name of the university) meaning short shoes worn with laces.
The saddle oxfords designed by Dry Bones feature a distinctive design that was popular in the 1950s.
The basic "saddle" and "oxford" styles are faithfully reproduced, with some slight modifications.
First, the saddle. Normally, the saddle is sewn from the center of the instep down to the left and right, but the design adopted by Dry Bones involves part of the leather of the saddle extending backward to cover the top and connect to the back center.
This design has a slightly spacey feel and was only popular for a short time in the 1950s.
This also reinforces the top part of the shoe.
We also made some changes to the Oxford part. This type of design is called an inner wing style, and the part where the laces go is recessed into the leather upper, so it doesn't open all the way.
Westerners with low, narrow insteps can wear this design well, but for Asians with high insteps, the wingtip style leaves this area open, making them look rather unattractive.
So I talked to the pattern maker at the shoe factory and we decided to extend the tips of the wings by 5 to 8 mm on each side, which would allow the laces to be fastened neatly.
Until now, there have not been many Asians who wear inner wingtip leather shoes beautifully. I am proud that we have been able to make this a reality.
Furthermore, the thin leather on the edge is an original "double edge" specification. The edge expresses the FAD, which was popular only in the 1950s.
Furthermore, the thread on the top of the double welt is intentionally dark green, which represents the state of the black sewing thread used at the time, which has faded due to its poor durability.
We choose materials and stitching that make our shoes as light as possible, such as synthetic leather soles, pigskin linings, and McKay construction.
We offer classic and elegant leather shoes that are easy to wear and walk in.
