This fabric faithfully reproduces the "mobile pattern" sold at Montgomery Ward in 1955, and we've recreated a shirt made from curtain fabric of that era.
First, some background on this fabric.
Sears and Montgomery Ward are major American department stores that have long operated mail-order businesses.
They sell everything from clothing to sporting goods, furniture, home appliances, and even vehicles.
In 1950s America, "home decor," including furniture, furnishings, and curtains, became extremely popular.
Curtains, in particular, were popular from the start, and people would order the curtain fabric to make shirts and dresses, match the pattern of their sofas and curtains, or repurpose it for tablecloths and bedspreads.
Until the early 1950s, tropical floral patterns and exotic plant patterns were the majority...
From the mid-1950s, with the rise of space exploration, science fiction, and the popularity of modern architecture and furniture, "spacey and modern" designs flourished. This mobile pattern first appeared in the 1955 Montgomery Ward mail-order catalog.
We were able to obtain vintage fabric from 1955, so we made sure to replicate the original's line distortions and color scheme exactly.
Regarding the print plate, there were slight differences in specifications between the US of that time and 21st-century Japan, so we reduced the size by 17%.
The material is 100% cotton butcher weave.
It's a very textured and thick fabric with slub yarns woven throughout.
Using this meticulously crafted "spacey and modern curtain fabric from that era,"
we produced a Hawaiian shirt made from curtain fabric, a style surprisingly common at the time.
The collar is a classic long-point open collar, but... we used 15mm buttons, slightly larger than usual.
Instead of a chest pocket, we added two pockets above the hem.
It's what you might call a "beach shirt."
Personally, this was a pattern I'd always wanted to recreate.
Many people will surely feel the joy of having this pattern, which they've longed for for over 40 years, now readily available.
We've also designed and produced easy shorts using this fabric.
Why not try wearing them as a set and reminisce about a 1955 beachside?
