This jacket is based on the one used as a utility jacket (work wear) by the US Navy in the 1940s.
The N-3 jacket was made during World War II in the 1940s, primarily for deckhands. It is made of herringbone twill (HBT) in a distinctive olive drab color, and bottoms and hats were also made at the time.
The shape is similar to a typical coverall, so it is easy to wear and easy to match with other items. The front buttons on vintage jackets tend to have a laurel pattern or US.MARINE CORP. engraved on them.
At Dry Bones, we propose using a vintage N-3 jacket as a starting point and adding just a little extra effort to it.
The shape is exactly the same as the coveralls, with three pockets on the front. The material is olive drab herringbone twill, with a slightly faded finish that gives it a classic look.
And the sewing thread is not the base color, but a slight khaki color. Because the work is done on deck, where there is a lot of salt, the sewing thread will fade first.
The front buttons are dot buttons engraved with laurel leaves...these buttons have also been damaged by salt and have been given a rusty finish.
At that time, HBT was made of single width (110cm) fabric, so the facing was sewn in a straight line using the edge of the fabric. As a result, the sleeves are made of a single piece of material.
The fabric I got from Dry Bones was double width (148cm), so I rolled the facing in three and sewed it in a straight line. I also changed the sleeves to two pieces to make them easier to move around in as work clothes. It's a small change, but it brings it back to the traditional men's clothing specifications.
"USN" is stamped in indelible ink on the chest in a classic font typical of this era.
Although it has a vintage feel, it is a masterpiece that retains the pride of men's clothing.
